Oakland's Laurel District Neighborhood

Oakland's Laurel District is a neighborhood offering comfortable residential living and a thriving commercial corridor. Once an agricultural area of orchard farms and ranches, the Laurel attracted mostly German immigrants in the 1920s, drawn to the sunny climate and rural landscapes. In succeeding decades more homes were built, businesses continued to open, and a very diverse population came to call the Laurel District home. The commercial area extends along MacArthur Blvd., from High Street to Fruitvale Avenue as it leaves Laurel and enters the Dimond District. The Laurel has come to reflect many differing cultures and offers a wide array of products and services. You can expect some great shopping! I will be listing my personal favorites on my website, and encourage you to email me with shops I might have overlooked. You can reach me on my direct line at Pacific Union at

Mass transportation is readily available both in the Laurel and Redwood Heights. The bus system offers a quick, stress free ride down 35th Avenue to the Fruitvale Bart Station, and you can catch an express bus to San Francisco on High Street right below MacArthur Blvd. Bart to the San Francisco and Oakland Airports is now available, simple, and highly recommended from personal experience.

The on-ramp to Hwy 580 going west towards downtown offers a quick and easy commute to downtown Oakland, Berkeley, Emeryville and San Francisco, and is located just off 35th Avenue, two blocks below MacArthur Blvd. The on-ramp to Hwy 580 east towards Hayward, Livermore, and Castro Valley is located on MacArthur Blvd., a long block heading east from High Street. The Hwy 13 on-ramp heading north towards Berkeley and Walnut Creek is off Redwood Road as you head up towards the hills. If you work in San Francisco or anywhere in the Bay Area for that matter, you should have little trouble finding a neighbor interested in car-pooling. We are a friendly group here!

The MacArthur Metro is a community newspaper serving the neighborhood defined by Fruitvale to Seminary Avenue, and Foothill Blvd. to the Warren Freeway. You can pick up a copy for free at most coffee shops and grocery stores in the Laurel. The Metro carries very interesting articles on local community issues, and a schedule of community events you might find interesting. The newspaper has a classified ad section.
